What is the biggest strength of the programs out there, relative to their
competition? If you have to pick one thing (re: playing ability) that they do
better than most of their peers, what would it be?

You've suggested

Shredder 4: Endgame technique
Crafty 17: Tablebase handling

How about also for:

Junior 6
Rebel Century 1.2
Fritz 6
Rebel Tiger
Hiarcs 7.32
Nimzo 2000
(others too)

?
