Ah. Yes, if both moves are equal, you should obviously choose the one that
improves your position in 3 ply.

It is somewhat likely that a program will choose this move, too, because it did
a 3 ply search and determined that move to be the best. The subsequent searches
_assume_ that move is the best, and will probably keep it.

However, if the program thinks the 5-ply move is slightly better, it will play
the 5-ply move.
