I didn't have any problems. (non-working sound is not a problem for me :)

I used the LinuxPPC-1999 distrubution to develop my engine. That and
email, news and a browser. YMMV.

As long as you don't mean a GUI, it should be rather trivial.
I wouldn't port it to Linux atm though, but give MacOSX a chance. (Just
my opinion, I'm not an Apple PR guy :)

Not sure now.. but programs like Amy, ColChess, Echelon, OliThink,
Pierre, Sjeng and (OxChess ;) shouldn't be a problem. I remember I
had problems getting Crafty to run. It compiled almost out of the
box, but crashed when I started it.
