Being provocative is fine. And you are correct, this place would be boring if
people didn't bring different articles, insights, and opinions here. But, there
is a difference between being provocative and being insulting. People do not
lose credibility here for being provocative. And, the credibility issue was not
just one of whether this particular issue had merit, it was also one of whether
this issue was worth losing credibility over. Disparaging remarks are generally
frowned upon and doing it over how someone sets up their chess server account
does not seem to make much sense. But, as you say, why worry about it if your
reputation here does not matter to you?
