If I was running the damn thing, I would make it so that the programmer could nominate a respresentive to play their program if the programmer could not turn up. If you have the best there then you will get more interest than having a few programmers who happen to have the time and money to show up. If programmers want to have a get together, then I suggest they arrange something else or maybe have a video link up if they want to talk about programming. There is such things as the phone, internet, video confrencing. So using the tournament as an ecuse to get together is weak. Sure a world championship does not always produce the best, but you would think they could at least make an effort to get the best there, rather than having rules to drive them away. Personally, the people who make the rules and arrange things are not doing a good enough job, I have no idea who they are but from what I have heard so far, this is unacceptable. This of course is just my opinion
