I tried to make a short sentence, instead of something like "let N1 be the computed depth of program A, and N2 depth of program B, etc...". And I got at least 2 remarks for this! Waw! I used to post messages that never got any attention by anyone, but now I've learned how to rise interest. :) >Just saw your performance on the French championship, you did very well. >Are you satisfied with your third place? Mmh... Shouldn't you say "second place" instead? I was third "ex-aequo" last year. I share the second place this year with Chess Wizard (written by Frederic Louguet, mostly known for the "Louguet Chess Test"). Well... I can say I'm satisfied because Tiger lost only one game (against Wizard), and draw against Virtual, and because I have totally rewritten the program in June. I didn't even expect to be ready for the french championship. But I'm mostly insatisfied to see my poor positional play. Still a lot of work to do... >And how does compare the top-3 >programs of France with the rest of the world? I suppose you already know about Virtual. Wizard is a good positional player. Several months ago I sent the 16 bits version of Tiger to Frederic, and Wizard won by 6-0. Gasp! This time I expected a better result, but... A damn good and solid program! Too bad he had to withdraw from the WMCC... I don't know exactly how strong Tiger is. Sure it is very strong in fast chess. Tiger gets 2485 on LCT-II on a K5 100MHz computer with 16Mo hash tables (POS=39%, CMB=71%, END=61%). LCT is maybe a little too kind with Tiger. From the games I play against other well known programs, I'll say at least 2350 on this machine. Or maybe even 2400? Hard to know. I play every game "by hand" switching under W95, so I cannot play 57460 games to get a reliable rating. But I like to see what's happening in those games. >First the battle was between USA, England and Holland. Now we feel the >breath of Germany. Is France is on his way too? I hope so. There were 10 programs in the french championship last year, and 14 this year. BTW, maybe you can explain something that has always been a mystery to me: how is it that a single country, Holland, has so many top level chess programs??? I think about you, Mr Morsch and Mr De Koning. And programs that are so different in style: positional nightmare Rebel, hyper-fast road runner Fritz, and mobility cruncher extension intensive King... I guess the Netherlands championship is hot as hell! You know, in France, we had a TV commercial which said "La Hollande, l'autre pays du fromage" (Holland, the other country of cheese). Maybe one day there will be "La France, l'autre pays des programmes d'echecs" (France, the other country of chess programs)! Oh, there's another common point between France and Holland: a small island in the caribbean where I spend some of my hollidays: Saint Martin (Sint Martin). A really nice place: no taxes, no border between the french and dutch side! And grilled lobsters for five dollars. What about a tournament there? > I indeed plan to visit the tournament for one day. Hope to see you! - Christophe -
