Crafty is undoubtedly a very strong program. Bob Hyatt has put in a lot of
effort and Crafty is getting better and better. So are the commercials, but
their releases are much less frequent. Crafty has been doing very well in the
SSDF list, but I think that it has yet to face some tough opposition after which
it will be much clearer just how strong it is. Hiarcs, Shredder, Tiger, etc.
Crafty and Fritz play in a very similar style so it was not much of a surprise
to me that Crafty scored about 43% against Fritz. In my games it scored only
38%, but then I have played close to 200 games, while the SSDF played only 42.
My prediction is that Crafty will be rated about 2600 (which is faboulous!),
while Fritz will be about 2700-2720. My estimates regarding Goliath are that it
should be about 2580, while SOS is definitely in Crafty's league, if not
slightly better. Head to head, SOS should top Crafty, it all depends on the
scores against other engines.
