No doubt, it can be difficult to understand. If you read the book, a lot will
become much clearer, or even seeing the sequel "2010" helps. The book is in fact
almost exactly the film, except that we benefit from knowing what is going on,
such as the reason HAL goes mad (not at all obvious just from the film), or what
happens to Bowman when he is sucked into the monolith and becomes Starchild.
Visually, it's all there, but we have virtually nothing to help us understand
what it is we are seeing. In a sense, Blade Runner is like this as well, which
explains why the critics blasted it on it's release. The original film was
presented to the critics in a preview WITHOUT Ford's voice-over narration, and
left them completely mystified by many things. They reported that Scott was off
on a trip of his own in his new incomprehensible science fiction film. The
studio was deeply worried that the audience would be just as confused, and the
narration was included in the release. Consequently, the Blade Runner critics
initially saw and reported on was different from that which was released.

Both 2001 and Blade Runner were conceived as visual narrations which is not to
the taste of everyone, but is certainly an interesting artistic choice.
Personally, both are on my top lists.
