I know there are those who have tried both FICS and ICC and are satisfied with
FICS. No point in arguing. My experience has been that it is much easier to
get games against opponents who I find challenging (other than computers) on
ICC. My subjective impression, unsupported by statistics, is that FICS has
crashed more frequently, but others may have had a different experience. FICS
admins have been extremely unhelpful whenever I had any question or issue;
again, just my personal experience. They've been a lot more helpful and
professional on ICC.

I do wonder, though, which version of Blitzin struck you as "putrid", and
exactly why you say this. Did you find it ugly? Was it missing features that
you wanted? Couldn't you configure it to suit your tastes? Was it hard to use?
 I have used a number of versions, from 1.4something to 2.30, and they have all
seemed very attractive and easy to use, with ever increasing numbers of useful
features. I've tried Winboard and CClient on FICS; both are good interfaces.
Of course, both can be used on other servers (including ICC!) and Winboard can
be used by computer accounts, but I haven't read any other convincing reason why
either should be preferred to Blitzin.
