When I first subscribed to ICC (about 3 years ago), I simply wanted to play chess online and have a rating. I had recently bought a computer and was an internet newbie. When I typed "chess" on Yahoo and ICC was prominent in the results and I was impressed, simply for its ability to play online (this was before Yahoo Chess). While observing GMs and Masters on occation is fun, it was not the main reason I subscribed. When I discovered FICS it satisfied my main want at no cost, so, for ME, it was a no-brainer. Different people have different wants. So if main purpose is to play with decent players (without the Yahoo mayhem), I would recommend FICS. If you want to see strong players battle it out, ICC is for you! (Although I am intrigued by the World Chess Network, haven't tried it yet, but heard some good things about it. If there is a cost involved in the future, I wonder how much it would be. Competition with ICC ought to improve BOTH services, and the chess consumer WINS!! :) ) With that ICC money I could buy a couple of chess books, a piece of software, or start saving up for the PalmIII so I could play portable chess. It all depends how you want to spend your Chess Dollars! Mike
