He no doubt refers to Chess 4.5 (Slate and Atkin), one in a series of programs
that won NACCC titles for close to a decade.  IIRC, Slate and Atkin wrote an
article on it in Chess Skill in Man and Machine (which I thought was a book you
regarded highly?  I seem to recall you doing a review of several titles a while
back.)  FWIW, the article is also reprinted in Computer Chess Compendium (Levy,
ed.)
