Subject: My take on anonymity

I posted this a long time ago, but since the current moderators are discussing
it again it's worth a visit. My personal policy is to be as anonymous as the
medium I'm participating in. On a private mailing list where I see everyone
else's real name and ISP, I use my full name. On Usenet I am anonymous. Here,
on the assumption that people here post with real names I would be happy to do
likewise, except for the fact that there are people who read here but never
post, and so are anonymous to me. If I can't know who are the people reading my
posts, then I don't wish to give them any more personal information than they
have given me. I would provide real info to ICD should my identity or behavior
become an issue, again with the proviso that I not be forced to post it on what
is still a public forum. IMO the point of ICD having real names on file, or on
request at any time, is to curtail bad behavior. Beyond that there is no need
to publish personal info with every post.
