I think the German chess programmers have the best chances for leaps and bounds
of improvements among the amateur engine writers.

I think you have good points about the incredible improvements of JRCP, and I
think in 3 or 4 years it might be the strongest program in the world.  But even
among ameteur engines, it will be a real job to pass Crafty and Ferret, it it
can even be done.

Similar to JRCP is Yace.  Look at the strength improvements in just a few
months!

It is always possible for someone to come up with something revolutionary (like
the invention of NULL MOVE).

I think if Phalanx had a really fast move generator, it would be the strongest
amateur engine.  It is among the top programs with one of the slowest move
generators.  It's NPS is about 1/4 to 1/6 of what Crafty does.

Predicting the future is hard.  Heck, predicting the present is hard, let alone
the future.
