The first time I read your post, I thought you meant "chew on my opponents", not
the pieces.  Hey, that might work even better!

Talking about The Rat (GM Duncan Suttles opening), with White, Suttles
frequently opened 1.g3 ... 2.Bg2 ... 3. d3.  It's pretty obvious why it became
known as The Rat, crawling around near the bottom of the board.
