If your chess program is pretty small, there should be no difference between the old Athlon, the Thunderbird, and the Duron, because they all have 128k L1 cache. If your program is pretty large (HIARCS), it will run much faster on the old Athlon and much slower on the Duron, because the old Athlon has 512k L2 cache and the Duron only has 64k L2. If your program is neither small nor large, it will run faster on the Thunderbird, because the Tbird has 256k L2 cache and it's faster than the old Athlon's L2 cache. I think the Durons are great unless you want to run big chess programs or you want to have a really fast chip, because Durons only go up to 700MHz. If you're buying an AMD motherboard, you should probably do your homework. I've heard that there are some crappy chipsets out there, but I don't know which ones they are.
