Subject: Computers and Endgame Play

Author: Howard Exner

There was a time when a common technique to beat machines was to
swap down to an ending and then take advantage of the weakness in the
machines endgame play. While the programs have improved greatly here
I believe that the "next frontier" (I'll bet this phrase will peak
Thorsten's interest :)) for programmers should be concentrating on
tweaking endgame play. What are the major obstacles to this? Depth
and the horizon effect? Knowledge vs depth trade-offs?

It seems more and more that comp vs comp games are being decided
in the endgame and that the spoils will go to the endgame masters.
