Endgames usually have fewer than ten pieces on the board in total.  The goal of
the opening and middle game is to get into a good endgame position. If you end
up ahead in material but have a bad position then you will probably lose the
chess game.

I recommend that you buy the Rebel 11 CD chess program since it has so much
chess information on it.  There are also several good chess books on the market
for beginners.  A good place to buy chess programs and books is
http://www.icdchess.com

Don't be disappointed if you are never very good at chess.  Only a few thousand
players out of millions of players ever reach the master levels.
