Subject: Shredder 5 - first impressions

Author: Peter Berger

Date: 15:09:27 12/18/00

I got my self-bought christmas present this evening (s.o.)

I already expected it might be something special but didn't expect too much -
reading here made me a lot cooler ;-)

To not lose all possible credibility , better some negative thing first .

This is for sure the most RAM-eating chessprogram I have ever seen . With 128 MB
RAM under Windows NT 4.0 when using the tablebases from the CDs you can't even
use 64 MB Hash ( I had to change to 48MB ) !! This should mean that with 32MB
RAM you can't get the program to work properly at all when using the tablebases
if maths didn't escape me totally .. ; that's pretty ugly ( even worse when the
CD cover says you can use it with 32MB RAM safely ) .

OK .

GUI is simply marvellous ; I have never seen anything better so far .

I haven't checked on many new features yet ; there seems to be a lot to keep you
busy for _very_ long .

Instead I played two games against another chessprogram with time control game
in 1 hour , 10sec inc/move .

The last time I had such an amazing exerience was when I got Hiarcs 7 when it
was still quite new . It's simply _special_ ; I want to see more .

Please note that I am not connected to Shredder at all , yet I feel guilty for
being that impressed . But why not share the feeling anyway ?!

To make it short I'll forget about the first game which was a _very_ nice win
after a positional pawn sac , game decided in 39 moves ; and move over to the
2nd one :

Both programs out of book at move 4 after e4 ; 6. Bb5 looks/is completely
senseless ( please note , again something negative ! ) , yet ..

Moves like 21. ...Rc8 , 28. ... Kh7 and 29. ... f6 are simply cool IMHO and turn
me on .

Time will tell what it's worth and SSDF is a hard challenge .

Yet this program is so great :-) ..

I couldn't resist to share .
