In general I tend to agree with your opinion. But I also think that the decision
to change engine versions or opening books throughout the tournament depends on
the purpose of the event. If you want to see the strongest engines play
interesting chess and/or emulate tournament conditions comparable to say
Paderborn then there are no problems IMO. You can't decide which is the
strongest program by running a Swiss tournament without changes from start to
finish anyway.

Another point would be to careful when comparing human and computer tournaments.
I imagine that (even/especially) Kasparov devotes some time to analysis and
preparation between rounds, which might be comparable to tweaking an engine,
removing a bug or changing a bookline.

To sum up my viewpoint. I don't take the "winner" too seriously because of the
inherent randomness, but I intend to use some time on the games that are played
by my favourite programs.
