I believe you're right about the "stand pat' issue. Crafty computes an array of scores assuming each side does the most attractive capture, and then does a second pass over the scores to handle the "stand-pat" option. Arasan does something very similar. It looks to me like your method is equivalent to this, although I haven't looked at it in great detail. --Jon
