It is not possible with the current software interface, yes.
But that could be changed/extended.

I have not carefully studied Eugene's code with respect to resizing,
but there are cache designs which permit such a resizing with only moderate
overhead.  Even if the current design does not allow this, it most
probably can be changed to do so.  But, as always, that involves some
programming work...  but it should be doable.
