I too did not realize that my download of Genius2 was pirated software. It comes with a doc file that is in Italian. As far as I can tell, it neither identifies itself positively that it is pirated nor whether it is freeware. I'm not sure, since even with the help of a babelfish translation, not everything is translated so I'm not sure exactly of everything it says. I assume, since there isn't an unambiguous indication from Lang and company that the software is freeware, that it is pirated. A fairly safe assumption I think. I've now *deleted* the program. I can always download it later if it turns out to be legit, but I doubt it very much. It is too easy to excuse oneself from using this pirated version of Genius2 with some type of rationalization like, "this is not a piece of software that I would pay money for, so I'm not really costing Lang any money by using it", but I think that is crap. Using something that does not belong to you is not right unless you have permission to do so. The appropriate thing to do is to ask Lang for permission to use it (or pay for it). To do otherwise, is not too different from "borrowing" someone elses car without asking for their permission. It is interesting, however, that this piece of pirated software is actually rather good advertising for any future version of Chess Genius that might be released. It has created a lot of positive reactions. Hopefully, this point is not lost upon Lang and so maybe he will decide to release it as freeware. I would buy such a future version. I'm impressed with Genius2. Lang was (is?) very much ahead of his time.
