You tell them "don't do that again, or else" and they remember it for a while. But how long a while is can vary. Chris probably wants three things: 1. Respect for what he has done. He deserves that as does _anybody_ that has actually written a viable chess engine. In his case, oddball ideas made his program unique and his interest in trying those ideas ought to be applauded. 2. Contribute to discussions. He can do this. I have had good dialog with him on many occasions. 3. Further specific "causes". He dislikes the ICCA. He will take every opportunity he gets to make negative remarks about the organization or its officers/members. This is nearly a "vendetta" of sorts. 4. He likes controversy. He will make statements intended to provoke arguments. just like some kids do... "My dad can whip your dad..." I don't think you can separate the two 'sides' of him, so that you get the contributions, without the grief. I'm pretty neutral myself, but I have been involved in the "problem side of him" several times, once right after we formed CCC. So even though I am "neutral" my common sense tells me Bruce is right on target. The old "fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me" saying comes to mind. We've been fooled more than twice. It does have to end at some point... I would suggest that the next group of moderators take this issue up, if they feel like they have the time to put out the small fires that will erupt. Another issue is Thorsten and Chris together. One is like potassium, the other is like water. Pretty harmless apart, but together you get explosions. They sort of "feed" each other and the discussions with others escalates... Which is what "friends" do with each other of course. But the overall effect can cause some discussions to spiral out of control and right into the moderators' laps...
