It's sad to have to say no to such enthusiasm, but we have to. It's also
sad to miss out on meeting one of the top chess programmers.

The trouble is, if we make it an open tournament, we would quite likely
get entries from overseas professional chess programmers who would have
money riding on the results. From what we've heard of some overseas
tournaments, things can get pretty tense if the organisers make even a
minor mistake, or if some of the more argumentative programmers think
they have.

This is the first time any of us have organised a tournament like this,
so we want to avoid that kind of hassle. By restricting entries to
Australia and possibly New Zealand, we hope to keep the tournament small
enough and friendly enough that we can learn as we go. If things go well
we will probably hold the event again in future, and perhaps it could be
open to programmers world-wide once we have the experience to organise
that with confidence. (I think the Dutch event went this way, Dutch only
at first, but open later on.)
