I am currently studying a variation against the Ruy Lopez Exchange, The main line seems to go like this: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Bxc6 dxc6 5.O-O Ne7 According to Soltis, this move was proposed and analysed by Keres in the '70. 6.Nxe5 Qd4 7.Qh5 g6 8.Qg5 Bg7 9.Nd3 f5 10.e5 c5 11.b3 h6 12.Qg3 f4 13.Qf3 Bf5 14.Bb2 Qd5 Here, the books I have on the subject offer 15.Nxf4 Qxf3 16.gxf3 O-O 17.d3 Nc6 18.Nd2 Nxe5 with unclear play. I tried the line against Rebel but on move 15, still in its book, it played Qxd5 instead of Nxf4. It is the only move in its book in that position. I have searched for that alternative in ECO (2nd ed.), MCO13, a few monographies and several databases and I have only found one game, played in 1996. I don't know if this move is better or worse than Nxf4, but it seems to be a novelty. The databases I have searched in are Rebel's Million Base and Top Base (on the Bonus CD-ROM), the Ultimate Game Collection II and the 400,000 games collection that came with CA2 when I bought it. I have also looked in the game collection available at ftp.pitt.edu. To Ed and Jeroen: As this move does not seem to exist in the current theory (As far as I know...), I was wondering if it a personal choice of Jeroen or a suggestion from some chess player conseilling the design team? Thanks, Francois Bertin fbertin@gm.gamemaster.qc.ca
