A very good point IMHO ( I don't know why , but most chessprograms are not
availlable in supermarkets and computer shops in my country though ..).

I did a little experiment several times ; I asked some ordinary
people/chessplayers which chessprogram they know and estimate as a strong
opponent .

This experiment was done in Germany ( might make some difference ).

A general trend :

_Everyone_ knows Fritz ! Several know Genius and Deep Blue ; a few know
Chessmaster .

Most of the others are completely unknown .

Those who have heard about Deep Blue tend to think it is pointless to play
against computers anyway as they look up all the moves in some big databases and
chess is solved .

Just for fun a little example ;-) :my mother, father, sisters and my brother.

My little sister knows only Fritz ( she bought a copy for training ) - she has
heard about Chessmaster6000 , too ( Yahoo).
My big sister knows about Chessmaster and Fritz ( she doesn't own a chessprogram
but plays at Yahoo ;-))).
My big brother knows Fritz, Deep Blue, Genius and "the talking worldchampion" (
not sure about this name ; it's some dumbed down Shredder version ) .
My father knows Fritz and Deep Blue .
My mother knows none of them :).

I think Shredder is completely unknown to most potential buyers in the world !
Same with Tiger ( although I think this might change soon , the name is easy to
remember ) .

It seems that maybe this decision wasn't made by Mr Weiner .
