I own the book, "Encyclopedia of Chess Middlegames" and as I play through the combinations I am recording the errors that are in the book. The common scenario is the defending side missing a good defensive move, thus wrecking the "combination". This I think depicts one of the many strengths of computer programs - defending well against combinations. I'm using Rebel but the other programmers were finding similar errors using their programs. Some of the errors were quite comical. In one of the problems the winning side blissfully went on to victory only because the defender side missed delivering a mate in one himself! Back in 1980 when this book was written they did not have the convenience of double checking the lines with computers. Chess Challenger most likely would recommended pushing the a pawn two squares for the majority of the problems. > >I'm glad your redacting the ECM set. I went back and downloaded all the posts related to ECM98 and am coming to a similar conclusion that you made in the early posts. You mentioned that you would like to see a clean suite with problems that were not "flaky" - moves that really did not create a decisive combination. Those for the most part are these broken ones with faulty defensive lines (book errors I call them). I agree that this would be a nice practical collection if these indecisive problems were axed. If you would like to take over the project again I would certainly not object. It's nice to have you back on CCC. > >- Don > > > >On April 24, 1998 at 07:16:35, Howard Exner wrote: > >>On April 24, 1998 at 04:43:59, Manfred Rosenboom wrote: >>>Hi Howard, >>> >>>yesterday I upoaded the following two files to my web area: >>> >>>http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Launchpad/2640/ECM98.zip >>> (your file with all the ECM98 positions) >>> >>>http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Launchpad/2640/ECM98pgn.zip >>> (my version with all bm opcodes in PGN notation) >> >>I'll download the one with the opcodes in PGN notation.
