Bruce, have you considered GIFs instead of JPGs? If the diagrams used solid colors for the squares, GIFs would actually be smaller than JPGs, as JPEG is optimized for 24-bit (or is it 32-bit) color photos whereas GIF is good when there are few colors and large areas of a single color. As the diagrams are now, with marbled backgrounds, GIFs may be larger than JPGs but probably not by much. (And they're lossless, so they'd look a lot better!) Just a thought.
