I was about to post the same thing.  Bruce, have you considered GIFs instead of
JPGs?  If the diagrams used solid colors for the squares, GIFs would actually be
smaller than JPGs, as JPEG is optimized for 24-bit (or is it 32-bit) color
photos whereas GIF is good when there are few colors and large areas of a single
color.  As the diagrams are now, with marbled backgrounds, GIFs may be larger
than JPGs but probably not by much.  (And they're lossless, so they'd look a lot
better!)
