That book is unbelievably awful.  It has so much outright crap in it, you will
have to spend time unlearing.  It is on the same level as the tripe spewed by
Schildt and Traisiter.

K. N. King's book on C is a very good beginning book.

A chess engine as a first project is incredibly daunting.  Look at TSCP and SCP
for ideas on how to start.
