Subject: Need help: which is faster for chess 1.4 athlon or dual pIII 1.0ghz

I generally run linux so would love to have dual system but am not sure which
would run crafty faster the single athlon or dual pIII's. but I am sure they are
both faster than what I have now a 433 cel. :(

(must upgrade fast)

Let me also say that I would like something under $2,000 us. and would not mind
building it myself.

I would be using it for general stuff, trying to write programs in C,C++, and of
course chess mostly my database programs and playing programs Yace,CT,Crafty
etc.

main reason for upgrade is any time you are compiling something and try to do
something else, it gets sooooo slooooow.
