Alpha-beta is common sense applied to the search. It doesn't represent
any controversial belief programmers have about chess. People use it all
the time when calculating, though not in a formal and conscious way.

If you are going to criticize computer-chess, find the right target, not
some innocent algorithm. Maybe what you want to say is that searching is
silly. There were several famous failed attempts to make a good chess
program without heavy searching. If you know how to do it, you are
smarter than most of us.
