It doesn't represent any controversial belief programmers have about chess. People use it all the time when calculating, though not in a formal and conscious way. If you are going to criticize computer-chess, find the right target, not some innocent algorithm. Maybe what you want to say is that searching is silly. There were several famous failed attempts to make a good chess program without heavy searching. If you know how to do it, you are smarter than most of us. Amir
