Bruce - I am no programmer and do not understand much about all this.
I try to- but you are the better person to ask.

But from my experience I have found out that many alternative programs
i like to play with often play weak moves.

The normal xyz program increases its score.
The different program increases its score since it was able to realize a
move
that gets a bonus to the static evaluations.

this continues a few more moves (or less moves but few plies).
Suddenly - the normal program gets a fail-low.

Why ??
Because SEARCH suddenly saw the idea behind the point of the moves the
other program did.

Of course we have more often cases where the situation is opposite.
But - i want to refer to situations like this.

I feel that this mechanism fits to the conflict HUMAN vs. machines
playing has.
Often humans do also play moves that increase programs evaluations and -
after a while - the programs see that the silent moves the humans did
had a covered plan.

I am interested in these situations.
I always wonder why the search was unable to SEE the problems earlier.
Often I go to the point, take back a few plies or moves and give the
normal programs more time. When they have searched deep enough, i wait
if they see it. Often they don't.
Many possible reasons. Pruning. Whatever.
The programmer can find out WHY.
