This reminds me of a game I saw when I was young. It was the game Janowsky -
Marshall which was highly praised by the book author. In the game Janowsky
attacked at the king side while Marshall grabed the weak white pawns at the
queen side. At White's 37. move there was a question mark. The game went on for
many moves, I think over 70. Finaly Marshall won. The author of the book claimed
white would have won if he had played differently at move 37. I could never find
out how to win at move 37. Of course I was too stupid.
When I analyzed that game with a program it could find no win for white at move
37. So White's attack was not that good. It was bad to give the queen side pawns
away. Why did the game last so long? Well Marshall had several chances to win at
once, but he didn't used them. After all it wasn't such a great game. To this
conclusion I came by computer analysis. Before I had the feeling I didn't
understand the game, now I think I have a much better understanding.
Kind regards
Bernhard
