The latest releases have a pretty good installation interface and drivers for most hardware have been made available. The biggest problem is the winmodem that is installed in some computers but even that has been overcome with drivers. The PC I'm running SuSE on has a winmodem but I found a driver for it, hence I'm posting here. As for programming chess engines, Linux comes standard with C compilers and Borland has released Kylix. So unless you are programming in VB that should be no problem. I don't think you would have to spend years learning a new OS, just some basic Unix/Linux commands. Perhaps a month or so to get comfortable. Have you ever installed WinXXX from scratch? Not so easy. And if what I hear from the M$ case is correct, the PC companies will be allowed to build PC's with dual boot OS's. So you may be abe to get WinXP and Red Hat already installed. Steve
