I guess that part of the commercial programs also did not optimize their code
for speed because of this reason.

If they do something that is optimized for speed but cannot be changed they will
also suffer if they try to change the program.

I also do not know how much time other commercial programmers dedicate for their
program(I know that at least part of them have a full time job not in chess
programming so they do not dedicate their time to their program).
