I think the problem lies in the attempt to establish an absolute rating,
which can only succeed in a singular closed system.  If people could
look at an ICC rating as significant only for ICC, all would be well.
But that doesn't happen.

I would like to see ICC have a rating system based on rank.  For
example, Ferret's rating would be 1 in blitz, mine would be 5279 :).
Or, the rating could be expressed as a percentile.  That would have more
meaning in the context of ICC, than a psuedo-absolute rating which may
or may not have relevance outside ICC.  In any case, the percentile or
rank should replace or be shown with the current rating in the finger
command.

I think the ICC should do something to counter the impression that the
ratings are inflated, otherwise they may tend to lose credibility over
time.
I do think freechess (fics) has a nice feature, which is the rank or
crank command, which shows a player's relative standing in the various
categories.
