I feel somehow uneasy about the direction this discussion takes so I will answer
very briefly.

No, I don't think I have to add any engine to the list using your strong
definition. Gandalf is one of the engines that competes with the top availlable
amateur chessprograms regularly in user tournaments - it does fine but it is not
really superior. A new version might be better but that's guesswork . Newer
versions of the amateur engines will be better, too.

For Rebel Century the SSDF gives some idea about its strength ( I know about
some of the problems, but still ..).

The reason the first 17 places in the SSDF are taken by commercial programmers
is simply that the strong amateurs are not tested by them IMHO.

I think you underestimate the amateurs here and probably don't spend too much
time dealing with them. I like to match amateur programs against professionals
for my private enjoyment and I think I am not too far off here.

OK - I really hope noone will jump on me for this post and that it is safely
hidden in this huge thread .

Merry Christmas,
pete
