I cannot remember, but it is probably more than 8 years ago. Yace started as a
variant of the game Kalah (a two players game, that can be programmed very
similar to a typical chess engine). In between, the sources were not touched for

About 2 years ago, Yace started to be a program that can play chess. Before it
was just a search engine with piece square table evaluation, but I think already
rather bug free search code and typical extensions etc. Also, slightly earlier I
started to read some papers (especially by Ernst Heinz) about some current ideas
in chess programming.
