About 2 years ago, Yace started to be a program that can play chess. Before it was just a search engine with piece square table evaluation, but I think already rather bug free search code and typical extensions etc. Also, slightly earlier I started to read some papers (especially by Ernst Heinz) about some current ideas in chess programming.
