Well, I have my doubts about van Wely. I can't seem to recall a time where he
excelled in strong competition. The impression is that most of his rating points
are accumulated in weaker tournaments compared to other top players. And when he
does participate in strong tournaments the results are not impressive. Of course
I could be badly mistaken.

And contrary to your beliefs I doubt he'll feel an extra motivation. I suspect
he'll prepare as seriously as he undoubtedly did for Corus. So the motivation is
probably the same. Whether the results will be better depends on the first
game(s).

Regards,
Mogens
