The benchmarks Apple used to indicate that the G3/G4 runs twice as fast per
clock than a P3/Athlon were flawed. It's generally accepted that the original G4
(<= 500MHz) was about 30% faster than an equally clocked P3 or Athlon. The G4+
(> 533MHz), which Apple also calls a G4, is a very different design from the
earlier G4, and the few benchmarks I've seen indicate that the G4+ at 733MHz is
only marginally faster than a 500MHz G4. My guess is that the GHz G4s are maybe
as fast as 1.2GHz Athlons for chess stuff.
