Based on my understanding this assumption is wrong. The black knight can capture the white king and this is the reason that the position is illegal. The first thing to check in the position when you check for legal moves is capturing the opponent king and you do not need to care about capturing your king when you capture the opponent king. Only if you cannot capture the opponent king you care to check if the opponent can capture your king. Uri
