Not handicapped, but different, and in this case different means we don't know.
Take the same engines with the same opening moves with the same hardware but
give them individual computers with ponder on and who can say what will happen?
It's hard to say.

I misunderstood therefore and stand corrected.

No, not Tiger, but Chessmaster 8000. It had very poor results with the default
settings and many complained that this newer version was in fact weaker than
previous ones. Yet a number of new settings for CM have been used with very
interesting results, and as is the case here, even much better! Over in CSS they
have been having a CSS-Masters tournament with numerous engines including Tiger,
Fritz 7, etc. participating. The two finalists are.... two different settings of
CM8000. :-)

I think that Chess Tiger for Palm would lose to CM8000 on my Athlon 1 GHz.
