probably just some kind of marketing strategy. you know how some stars are,
like Ali or Michael Jordon. they announce a retirement, so that when they come
back to competition, the attention is raised to a higher level. lots of money
involved. Ed is probably the first programmer to come up with idea, to boost his
earnings. if this retirement works out for Ed, he probably will retire
two or three times like Ali did.
I can see the headlines now:  "Ed Schröder makes huge comeback, after being
retired two years, wins world computer championship with new Century 7.0. At the
awards dinner Ed announces his second retirement".
