I think it would help. Being able to focus on essentials and skipping
the unacheivable subtleties is part of being a good programmer, so
a good programmer should be able to keep his chess knowledge in check,
so to say... But I believe this is a case of very diminishing return
(strength of program as a function of chess skill) above a certain level.
