Hi John,

chess software for your computer offers many more possibilities than your Saitek
Centurion.

I'd suggest to try some cool free programs first and see if they fit your needs
or if you have to buy something instead.

A nice one is Bringer which you can download at http://www.reubold.onlinehome.de
. It is very easy to set up, has a nice GUI and you can set it to a playing
strength that is not too tough by adjusting its ELO value where 1400 will play
like a beginner, 2000 like a strong player and you can adjust the value close to
your own strength by trial and error.

REBEL Decade is also a fine free program. It will run on all Windows platforms
beside Windows XP. Download it at http://www.rebel.nl/decrel.htm .

Another one is WinBoard ; very easy to set up although the GUI looks a little
dull . But it also offers the ability to connect to a free Internet chessserver
where you can play against people from all over the world. Download it at
http://www.tim-mann.org/xboard.html - it comes with two free chessengines -
Gnuchess and Gnuchess 5.

Fritz 6 will be a good choice, Fritz 7 or Chessmaster 8000, too. There are also
many others, both freeware and commercial which all have their merits - many of
them are really great . But why not try first if one of the nice free options is
already all that you want?

Regards,
pete
