I am partial to play the board. It's a personality thing I think. Playing the opponent is a competitive thing, an extra game inside a game, a gambling sport. Chess is no longer a game of perfect information. Playing the board is truth and beauty and logic. I can see a possible third alternative. Play the opponent when it doesn't conflict with the first law which is play the board. (Don's 2 laws of chess, not to be confused with Asimovs 4 laws of robotics) - Don
