There is no comparison between Fritz 5 and the current Fritz 7 when it comes to
chess knowledge. The authors might just as well have renamed it to something
other than "Fritz" -- it's that different.

I think Fritz 7b is a great accomplishment in computer chess. It is very, very
strong. I expect that Chess Tiger 15 (and maybe Hiarcs 8) will be similarly
strong. On a fast PC, programs like this will win most games against ANY human,
even a strong GM, who is not ultra-prepared to play against such an opponent.
GMs have not yet devoted the time to really becoming computer-killers. They may
(or may not) choose to do so in the future -- if there were good money in it, it
would be likely.

I do NOT think Fritz or any other PC program is as strong as (much less
'stronger than') Deeper Blue was. It was not "dumb and fast" but rather "very
smart and unbelievably fast."

As usual, I could be wrong.
