Hmm.. this get me to thing of the old wise man and how to get a boiled egg to
stand on the edge.

I did a search on the topic in the archive files when the question was asked and
it wasn't mention there, but you are right it was my first thought too on how to
solve the time loss, eg. only apply it to the endgame.

Well, I did go to my chessclub (first time this year :( )instead of answering
here.
