Every method has its good and bad side effects.
However, you're right in the sense that most "openings" played without books
looked quite bad to me - often piece development was badly neglected.

Actually, MChess (which finished with 0,5/4) was the only program whose
PV looked like a "book line" most of the time, like 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 etc.,
not the 1. d4 d5 2.e3 stuff most of the other programs produced.
But it didn't help MChess much, as you could see...
