I am still in shock from the fact that Rebel has won this match, had it won, in fact, before this game started. It is easy to be wise after the fact, but it looks to me as if Anand's 3 e3 in the first slow game was almost an admission that he didn't know what to do. Perhaps he was thinking that this would keep the game slow, and under control. Instead he ended up with a messy middlegame position and no advantage. Ultra slow, maneuvering, positional systems have long been the way to go against computer programs. It seems to me that Rebel's team made a smart choice with this opening line, as slow approaches gave the computer a chance to mix it up. Maybe Anand needed to have the courage to duke it out in the main lines, 3 Nf3 or 3 Nc3. These may give White some theoretical advantage, but can be uncomfortable against the tactical ability of today's computers. Bottom line, it's hard to rely on any general approach against a top program today. Marc
